If music is the main squeeze of Hip-Hop culture, then drugs are its mistress. Drug addiction is nothing new to the game, but every once in a while things get out of hand and people end up in need of an intervention. While Snoop is perhaps the most open about his devotion to marijuana, he’s also one of the few rappers whose favorite past time—which is perfectly legal in his homes state of California with a medical marijuana card—hasn’t gotten out of control.
Then there are those who are not so lucky. Members of the Hip-Hop community who not only let drugs take over and sometimes end their lives, but just can’t seem to break away from the grip of addiction. The latest person to make headlines for this is producer Scott Storch. Once a sought after track master, as of late, Storch has been busted numerous times for powder possession, and even blew threw his estimated $70 million fortune since allegedly getting hooked on drugs back in 2006. In hopes that Storch can somehow turn his life around, here are 10 rappers he can look to for inspiration.
Clicks on the #’s below to see examples Scott Storch, a former member of The Roots, or anyone strung out, allegedly, can use to get right.
Lil Wayne
One good thing to come out of Weezy’s eight month prison sentence and three-year probation, was a no drugs and alcohol stipulation. Now that he’s clean, Wayne is more focused and ferocious with his flow, and has even found true love, we think.
Eminem
Em has been extremely open about his drug addiction. Once he kicked an oppressive pill habit, he dropped Relapse then Recovery, and has been on the straight and narrow ever since.
Kid Cudi
That “snow” was Kid Cudi’s drug of choice, and he dropped weed, too. The pressures of stardom furthered his descent into addiction, but taking time out from the spotlight allowed him to get clean and refocus.
T.I.
Tip’s dirty little secret came to light when he and his wife were busted with ecstasy and weed back in 2010. T.I. admitted to being addicted to painkillers, and after getting out of jail, Mr. Harris has cleaned up his life and made his family and career his focal point.
Fatlip
Fatlip’s Bolivian flake habit got so bad that he “accidentally” got a “professional” from a dude. These days he’s used his addiction to deter others from falling victim to nose candy, and reunited with his Pharcyde group members.
Lil Boosie
Drugs and bad decision making have long hindered Lil Boosie’s career. Potentially facing life in prison, or the death penalty, Boosie has since come clean about his drug addiction as he prepares to go to trial for murder this spring.
Pimp C
The late great Pimp C will be remembered for his talents and not his alleged drug addiction, but it’s the latter that cut his life short. The UGK member died of an accidental overdose in 2009 and the Hip-Hop world has never been the same.
DMX
DMX’s trials and tribulations resulting from his long-standing drug and alcohol dependency is one of the saddest examples of how addiction can ruin a career. On the plus side, his life has become a cautionary tale of how not to act.
Gucci Mane
From his countless run-ins with the law to his ice cream cone tattoo it’s obvious that Gucci Mane’s issues are drug related. A failed attempt at rehab commenced with stints in jail and a mental hospital, but now that he’s free he can hopefully get the help he needs.
ODB
As the most outspoken member of Wu-Tang, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s inner demons got the best of him, when he died from a drug overdose in 2004. While the conspiracy theories still run rampant, ODB’s legacy lives on, but his death is an example of how addiction can take one’s life.
