Medical marijuana users are free to breathe easier so to speak, thanks to the Obama administration. A new memo issued by the Justice department allows medical use of the drug without fear of prosecution for users or distributors.

The policy notes that it is not in their “best interest” to pursue individuals who use or provide medical marijuana in compliance with state law.  According to The Associated Press, the memo advises prosecutors that they,

“Should not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana.”

The Obama’s administration’s new policy is a sharp contrast to the Bush administration’s idea to endorse anti-marijuana laws regardless of state laws.

The memo does note however that federal agents will continue to detain individuals whose “medical” marijuana use exceeds the allotted amount and those who use it as a cover for other crimes.

Fourteen states allow the medical use of marijuana including Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii , Washington State and of course California.
